Lou Conter, the last known survivor of the battleship Arizona, which sank with the loss of 1,177 sailors and Marines in Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, plunging the United States into World War II, died on Monday at his home in Grass Valley, Calif. “The ship was consumed in a giant fireball,” he wrote in his memoir, “The Lou Conter Story: From U.S.S. Arizona Survivor to Unsung American Hero” (2021), a collaboration with Annette C. Hull and Warren R. Hull. Mr. Conter, who was knocked forward but uninjured, tended to survivors, many of them blinded and badly burned. Only 93 of those who were aboard the ship at the time lived; 242 other crew members were ashore.

(AP) — A bill seeking to protect those who travel to Pennsylvania to get abortions by barring public officials from cooperating with authorities in other states that criminalize the practice advanced Wednesday through the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives. At least 16 states -- the majority of Democrat-controlled states -- have adopted laws seeking to protect abortion access since last year. Many of those laws have provisions that protect providers and the people who come from other states seeking an abortion. Josh Shapiro has positioned himself as a defender of abortion rights. The buyers mostly resold the body parts, prosecutors said. A sixth person was previously charged in Arkansas in the same investigation on suspicion of stealing body parts from a mortuary she worked for, prosecutors said.
